Let Us Preserve Life

I am writing this to help protect our environment by preserving it as God intended in the beginning. God created the earth for His dwelling place, and all people on earth are commanded to love and take care of it. I think the most important task that people should do first is to learn the importance of the environment in our lives. I know not everyone really understands how our actions and the environment form a delicate relationship. We only think or care about the things that are within our personal sphere – our families, jobs, and friends. We disregard all the things outside of it. I think the reason is because, like me, I didn't have a deep understanding about how things work around us. When I was young, I used to wonder why people die. I feel I am connected to everyone. There is an enormous love in my heart for people. It hurts me to see people die. My grandmother used to say "we are not built like a stone to last forever." She was just trying to help me feel better. But I can't help myself from feeling sad and fear, because death could come anytime and take anyone. I was about in my late thirty's when God called me. I studied the words of God, and it answers my question about death. I thank God for it.

In the Book of Genesis, it is written God created people to live forever. Through disobedience, death entered into this world and destroyed humanity. Adam, Eve, and Noah died at the ages of 900 years or more. The earth was not nearly polluted as today, so it has to be the curse from sin causing the decrease of life span. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob lived for over a hundred years. Nevertheless, the patriarchs didn't die of sickness. According to the Holy Scriptures, they lived full of days, and their physical bodies died naturally. The Lord Jesus Christ came to deliver us from death, hell life, and to break the curse. That means we were supposed to live longer than the patriarchs. He restored life as it was in the beginning. But why death continues to consume lives? Today, people perish even at young ages through sickness, famine, accidents and weather calamities. I read in the Holy Scriptures, death, the penalty of sin, is in effect because people chose to disobey God’s commandments. People have given choices whether to live or to die. Mount Zion teaching is to help us understand the commandments of God which is the righteousness of God. We will be able to trace which sins did we trespassed so that we can all ask the Lord God for forgiveness and be healed. Restoration of all things will come if people will seek humbly before the Lord God and turn from all wickedness. According to the Holy Scriptures, during the time of Noah and Lot (nephew of Abraham), people perished without mercy through flood and fire. Prophecy foretold, the world will be destroyed for sinning through heat. As we can see, the earth's temperature is increasing, and causes all kinds of weather calamities to destroy lives. Do we have escape from it? Yes. Mercy from God is our shield. God placed us under grace that anyone who calls in the name of His Son Lord Jesus shall be saved. That is by repenting and following the two greatest commandments of God.

The earth consist ground, air, water and the atmospheres, and they contain living things as well as all habitats, forests, deserts, wetlands and oceans. Their only purpose is to help each other support life on the earth. God gave also the people responsibility to take care of it. Our environment is delicate as we are. It is like the human body; it is fragile and needs constant care. In order for people to maintain their health, they need to eat healthy food and take the necessary vitamins and minerals daily. Food and drinks must be free from preservatives, fats and chemical based ingredients. Daily exercises are needed for our body to help function properly. It helps the blood circulation, maintains our weight and eliminates unnecessary saturated fat to avoid future heart problems. Our environment has similar needs. In order for the environment to flourish so it can provide the full benefits in our lives, everything in it must be clean and at the right amount. When the air, water, sunlight and ground interact with each other, they produce in proportional amount natural elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide as well as vitamins and minerals to preserve life. For instance, the ozone layer contains these elements which provide shades by filtering all harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. One tree provides oxygen to seven people. It also acts as a filter against harmful pollutants. God created all things on earth and in the atmospheres in perfect balance. If there are harmful, foreign elements mingle in them, it will throw off the delicate balance God created and this in turn will affect our quality of life.

I also like to draw a connection between the physical earth and our personal homes. Like our home; we live in this earth and take care of it. We want to make sure it is comfortable and livable. In our homes, we sweep every bit of dust and wash all traces of stains. We maintain it by repairing all things that are broken down and paint every wall so that they are pleasant to the eyes. We clear it of all trouble and harmful things so that it will be a safe place to live, and everyone who lives in it feels only the joy of peace throughout the house. As the woman wears ornaments to compliment her beauty, we decorate our homes so that all the rooms are lovely to look at. Or as the man who spends time exercising to gain strength and have a healthy body, we make sure our homes stand strong and will not be moved by any strong winds or storms. Earth is our home, we should treat it the way we treat our homes. The only difference between our home and the earth is that if our homes are destroyed, we can replace them. There is no other place like earth. We cannot replicate it, if we should happen to destroy it through our irresponsibility. Scientists have travelled in the space to try to find another place like it, and they found none. We’ve studied every part of the earth, and it is filled with life. Unlike the moon and other planets, it has gravity so that people can walk on the ground and not float in the air. The ground has power to grow food to feed the hungry. It naturally bears all kinds of plants to beautify mountains and valleys. Air moves all biological materials to gather them in the atmosphere so that it can form rain and water for all thirsty creatures in the land. The sun, which is fiery and powerful, serves the earth. It bows down to it and gives its utmost energy. It lights even the darkest parts of the planet to bring life. All these things interact with each other to produce healing properties to keep us healthy. These benefits of the earth are free of charge. We are not required to pay for any of it, but our only responsibility is to love and take care of it as if it were our own homes.

People, however, don’t realize they neglect and abuse our home. We create garbage and dump it everywhere. Trees which filter the air and protect people from flood and landslides are being cut down in tremendous numbers to make writing paper, and use it mostly for useless purposes like paper towels to wipe away the never ending spots and dirt, then we toss them in the garbage can and make every corner of the earth landfill. Or, we burn them to pollute the air to suffocate all sources of life. Animals which help clean the environment are killed and skinned to provide for shoppers who are never content with fifty pairs of shoes, bags and clothes. The factories are producing products at demand of consumers who are mesmerized by the media’s promise to make their lives easier. They are covetous of obtaining more products, but they are blind to the fact that their desire for convenience is at the expense of the very planet that God created to sustain us.

Factories and commercial ships expel waste in the water which kills off marine life in which decreases our food supply and water cleansers. Inventors create vehicles and run it by burning fuel which is the major source of tremendous pollution all over the earth. Meanwhile we continue emit billions of tons of pollution in the environment to literally to annihilate human existence. It is the air that we breathe. It is in the water that we drink. It is in the food that we eat. Below are the damages that pollution created:

People suffer with all kinds of deadly diseases such as cancer, heart problems, infectious diseases and respiratory problems. The people are seeking help for their health problems, depending on these chemical breakthroughs that are being used as an opportunity to make a profit. This is wrong in the eyes of God. (Proverbs 3:29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor. For he dwells by you for safety's sake). Pharmaceutical companies, insurance firms, and the medical community in general, are in demand for their product and services.

It is destroying the ozone layer, which filters ultraviolet rays from the sun. People suffer skin cancers, eye diseases, blindness and early aging. Eye doctors, dermatologists, eyewear and skin care companies are in demand for their products and services to help people with their problems.

The wind which helps form rain in the atmosphere by carrying all biological substance, along with the pollution, has created abnormal weather patterns and temperature changes. This problem causes excessive heat during the summer and excessive cold during the winter. Also storms are inevitable; they damage property. Our raw materials are use up for repair and rebuilding, causing manufacturers to raise the price because of its shortages.

Acid rain distresses the ground from producing food naturally and abundantly. Farmers are working harder. It decreases our natural materials for clothing. Our manufacturers are using synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester to make clothes which are not biodegradable. They disintegrate and create toxic particles and absorb on the ground. These problems lead to deeper problems such as famine, malnourishment and sicknesses.

The imbalance of weather temperature causes all things such as metal to rust. It decays wood after years of outdoor exposure. This problem creates endless work on earth, and shortage of building material.

Because the temperature fluctuates, this causes mold and bacteria to grow. Bacteria interfere in the production of vitamins and minerals in the water and in the ground. Chlorine is added in water to kill these dangerous microorganisms; however chlorine produces negative side effects. Chlorine interacts with water and produces toxic chemicals called trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). It dries the skin and hair. It strips the natural moisture that protects us from airborne pollutants. Now our water is no longer drinkable. It is either filled with bacteria or altered by chemicals. The only way for us to drink water without harming us is through filtration. Sadly, the minerals and vitamins that were once in the water to help us stay healthy are destroyed.

We see that the work of man, inventions ‘chemistry and technology’ that was designed to help is actually harming people. Technology gives many benefits in people lives, because it makes products such as lotion, creams, and soap to help protect their skin from the damaging sun rays; it helps doctors and hospitals see the internal health problems of the people; it gives them appliances and vehicles to ease their lives, but created more pollution on earth. We were supposed to find ways to get rid of pollution more than finding ways how to live conveniently and comfortably from the damages made by pollution. Technology created products to shield us from the destroying effects of pollution, but it gives strength to pollution to destroy the people and the earth. People need to understand that whatever we do on earth, even the simplest thing, has an interaction with nature. It doesn’t disappear in the air or dissolve in the water or absorb in the ground. They interact with each other and create invisible destroying agents, toxin, which is very harmful to both our physical and environmental health.

As long as pollution continues, there will be never ending work on the earth. People will live grievous life throughout their lives. Death rate will keep increasing. People in medical fields will have no rest day and night. Products and services will keep increasing its cost. Stores and manufacturers will be opened 24 hours everyday. Workers will work at night time to catch up the needs and wants of people. This is not the life that God intended for us to live. I know that the government has the authority to turn things around. Since the manufacturers are responsible for this problem, they should help each other take care of this problem. The government should build bus and train stations that will use alternatives to fossil fuels. They should only run with renewable energy such as solar, wind, water, geothermal, hydrogen, and biomass. Renewable energy is natural resources that can be used sparingly or often, and it will not run out. It is natural and abundant to the environment. Nonrenewable energy, however, is a natural resource which can be made for fossil and radioactive fuel. They produce only in a limited amount because it takes time to produce it, and it is being used faster than nature can replace it. Find websites and links for more information about how these renewable energies work. They also teach us energy conservation and explain how pollution affects our environment and health. Government should require manufacturers to adjust the burning fuel temperature at a level which will not create pollution in the environment. This would decrease the pollution tremendously all over the earth.

People have no power, individually, to repair the damage that they have created on earth. They are preoccupied with work in order to pay bills. They will use whatever sort of convenience just to get to work and to live comfortably. However, by collectively living responsibly, we need to make an effort to help clean our environment from pollution "clean up your mess!" We can take a bus or train, or even carpool to go to work or shop to reduce great amounts of pollution. God gave us horses and camels as provision to take us from one place to another without distressing our environment. People need to plant trees and food in their yards to increase natural food production and to filter air. There are cheap, washable, hand towels to use as rag to clean tables or counters to minimize the use of paper towels. This will save many of our trees in the wild. The government needs to teach people beginning from childhood the importance of our environment and the result of neglecting it. They should be taught how to recycle all synthetic and plastic materials. A person can throw an empty plastic bottle in the water. Throughout time, plastic bottles disintegrate to pieces; fish nibble it, and eventually will end up in the human intestines. We need to use natural products to decrease the amount of land needed for waste. Since all appliances run by electric energy which is in turn produced by expending fossil fuels, people should minimize the use of their large appliances such as air conditioning, furnaces, and refrigerators.

Pollution is not just a simple problem. It is a mighty problem, and people should take care of it before it destroys the world completely. I would say pollution it is like termites. It destroys whatever it touches. The only way to stop it is if people work hard into getting rid of it by following the commandments of God. The Books of Moses teaches how to recognize good and evil in the eyes of God, and also how to execute the two greatest commandments that He commanded us through our Lord Jesus Christ. Loving God means being content with all the things that He gave us, and loving ourselves and our fellow people means whatever we make for ourselves and for anyone we do them in godly love. Godly love has no envy, jealousy, coveting, selfishness, greed, and pride. The children of Israel perished in the wilderness. Their sin was discontment.
Nature is obedient to God to this day. Although, we try to suffocate the earth with pollution, nature still fights for us in order for the earth to be livable. Don’t kill the things that give us life and let killer of life, pollution, lives. If you want this world to get heal from all kinds of problems, live as it was in the beginning by following the commandments of God and love our nature as a part of us. Live simple life by depending on the help of nature not on technology. The choice is yours!
